English (West Midlands): topographic name for someone who lived at a ‘new enclosure’ (from Middle English newe + hawe or heye) or a habitational name from some minor place called with these elements (in Old English nēowe + haga). New Hay and Newhay occur several times as placenames in Staffordshire and Northamptonshire some now lost. Americanized form of Assyrian/Chaldean Nwiya: from a personal name based on Syriac nwīyā ‘prophet’.
