This database contains the New South Wales convict death register, which was kept from 1828-1879. The register recorded convicts who died while serving their sentence, though some ex-convicts are also listed. It was originally maintained by the Principal Superintendent of Convicts and later by the Convict Branch of the Inspector-General of Police.

Information recorded on the death register includes:

  • Name of deceased

  • Ship of Arrival

  • Age at time of death

  • Date of death or burial

  • District or parish of residence

  • Other remarks regarding the convict or his death (for example: cause of death, name of officiating priest or minister, status of the convict)

Entries are arranged alphabetically by convict surname and thereafter by death date.
