Basque: Castilianized variant of Basque Zaldibar, a
habitational name from a place so named in Biscay province. The place
name is of uncertain derivation: it may be from zaldu ‘wood’,
‘copse’ or from zaldi ‘horse’ + ibar ‘water meadow’,
‘fertile plain’.
