Scottish (of Norman origin): from the Anglo-Norman French form,
Wischard, of the Old French personal name Guiscard. This
was formed in Normandy from the Old Norse elements viskr ‘wise’
+ hard ‘hardy’, ‘brave’, ‘bold’ (or possibly the Old French
suffix -ard). Compare the French cognate Guiscard.
