English: habitational name from either of two places named Winford,
in Somerset or in Newchurch on the Isle of Wight, or from Wynford
Eagle in Dorset. The first and last are named from a Celtic river name
meaning ‘white or bright stream’, the last having acquired a manorial
prefix from the del Egle family, who were there in the 13th
century. Winford, Isle of Wight, is named from an unattested Old
English winn ‘meadow’ + Old English ford ‘ford’.
