North German: from a Germanic personal name composed of the
elements widu ‘wood’ + kind ‘child’. The name became
famous as that of a Duke of Lower Saxony who was an opponent of
Charlemagne, and was consequently popular in northern Germany as a
personal name in the Middle Ages.
