Spanish and Italian: from the personal name Valerio (Latin
Valerius, a Roman family name ultimately derived from Latin
valere ‘to flourish’, ‘to be strong and healthy’). The name was
borne by several minor Christian saints, among them 4th-century
bishops of Trier and Zaragoza and 5th-century bishops of Sorrento and
of Antibes.
