Finnish: ethnic name from Finnish Suomi ‘Finland’. At one
time this term denoted only southwestern Finland, but nowadays it is
the national name for the whole of Finland. As a surname it is mostly
an adopted name during the names conversion movement at the beginning
of the 20th century.
