Welsh and Irish: probably from a personal name formed with Welsh ysgor ‘fort’, ‘camp’, ‘defense’ + the adjectival suffix -og. The family name is strongly
associated from an early date (1184 and 1250) with two fortified
manors in South Wales, Scurlage in the Gower Peninsula and Scurla, now
known as Trecastell, near Llantrisant, in mid Glamorgan. However, it
is not clear whether the family name is derived from the place name or
vice versa.
