Savoie Family History

Savoie Name Meaning

French: regional name from the region (former kingdom) of Savoy, French Savoie. This was consolidated in the 11th century by Count Humbert the White-handed, feudal lord of the kingdom of Arles. His descendants formed the great European noble house of Savoy, with large holdings in France, Switzerland, and Italy. Piedmont was closely connected with Savoy as early as the 11th century, since Humbert acquired a number of possessions there through marriage.
