Americanized form of Slovenian Rebec or Rebek: nickname from a hypocoristic derivative of the root of rebast ‘short-tailed without a tail’. German (Saarland): unexplained. This surname which is very rare in Germany is also found in France (Lorraine). Possibly also Flemish: habitational name from a place called Rebecques (in Pas-de-Calais France). This surname is very rare in Belgium and is not found in France.
