Japanese:: written 緒方 ‘beginning’ and ‘direction’ in the island of Kyūshū. This is the original form of the name which is habitational and taken from Ogata-gō in Bungo (now Ōita prefecture). In eastern Japan it is written 尾形 ‘tail’ (meaning the lower slope of a mountain) and ‘form’ and other variants also exist. (Ōgata): written 大形 with the first element meaning ‘large’.
