Altered form of Dutch Oudeman, Oudmans, or
Outmans, nicknames denoting an old man, though the last may
also be a variant of Houtman, a habitational name for someone
from a place named Ter Hout or a topographic name for someone who
lived by a wood or copse, from Middle Dutch houte ‘wood’.
