French: from a personal name derived from the Germanic personal
name Markwulf, Markolf, composed of the elements
mark ‘borderland’ + wulf ‘wolf’. The name was borne by a
6th-century abbot of Cotentin, who is commemorated in various place
names in Normandy: for example Saint-Marcouf in Calvados and Manche.
