French: probably a topographic name for someone who lived by an
important house, Old French maison, from Latin mansio
‘posting house’, ‘stage’ ‘halting place’ (on a route). However, the
centers of distribution in the U.S. (OH, PA, and NY) suggest that it
is perhaps more likely to be an altered spelling of Mason.
