Japanese: ‘chrysanthemum pond’ (also read Kikuike); found
mostly in western Japan. Another rendering, substituting the character
‘ground’ for ‘pond’ (both chi), is found in northeastern Japan
and the island of Kyushu. An ancient variant, Kukuchi of
Higo (now Kumamoto prefecture), is listed in the Shinsen shojiroku.
