French (also spelled Isidore): from a medieval personal name
based on Greek Isidoros ‘gift of Isis’. This was borne by at
least three Christian saints venerated especially in the Orthodox
Church. Compare Isidro. Isidoros is also found as a
surname in Greek, along with patronymics such as Sideropoulos
(see Sideris). NN Because of its perceived similarity to
Isaac and Israel, it also became popular in modern times
as a Jewish given name.
