English: habitational name from a place in Cumbria, so called from
the genitive case of the Old Norse byname Ormr ‘serpent’ (see
Orme 1) + Old Norse býr ‘farm’, ‘settlement’. The
form of the name seems to have been influenced by confusion with
Hornby. The surname is widespread in northern England.
