English: according to Reaney, a habitational name from Haston in
Shropshire, which is possibly named with Old English heafod
‘head’ + stan ‘stone’. However, the present-day
concentration of the name in Scotland suggests that in some cases at
least it could perhaps be from one of the places mentioned at
Hairston. 1881 census has 246, mainly Scotland; UK 137, EDN
36.
