English (chiefly East Anglia): from a Germanic personal name
composed of the elements folk ‘people’ + hari,
heri ‘army’, which was introduced into England from France by
the Normans; isolated examples may derive from the cognate Old English
Folchere or Old Norse Folkar, but these names were far
less common.
