Dutch and North German: from a Germanic personal name composed of
the elements agi(l) ‘edge’, ‘point (of a weapon)’ +
berht ‘bright’, ‘famous’. This was one of the most popular
names among the peoples living in the Low Countries in the Middle
Ages. The English cognate Egbert is not found as a surname,
despite the fame of King Egbert of Wessex.
