Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxfordshire, Sussex, and West
Yorkshire, are named from Old English denu ‘valley’ (see
Dean 1) + tun ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’. An isolated
example in Northamptonshire appears in Domesday Book as
Dodintone ‘settlement associated with Dodda’.
