French: habitational name from any of various places so called,
with minor variations in spelling, of which the main one is in
Somme. They are named with a Germanic personal name Betto (an
assimilated form of Berto (see Bert) + Old French
court ‘farm(yard)’). The name is now very frequent in Portugal,
where it first occurred in the 15th century (see
Betancourt).
