German and French (mainly Alsace Doubs and Lorraine): from the ancient Germanic personal name Bertwald composed of the elements berht ‘bright famous’ + wald ‘rule’. The second element has been altered by association with German hold ‘lovely splendid’. This surname is also found in Haiti where it is very rare.
