South German: habitational name for someone from either of two
places called Berkheim, near Biberach and near Esslingen in
Württemberg. The place name is a compound of Old High German
berg ‘hill’, ‘mountain’ + the common suffix of place names
-heim (related to English home). In some cases it may
possibly be a habitational name from any of various places in Hesse
and Alsace named Bergheim.
