English: habitational name from a place in Hertfordshire, first
named in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, who held the manor
there. It was named in commemoration of the city of Baghdad, known in
Middle English and Old French as Baldac; its Arabic etymology
is said to be ‘city of Dat’, the personal name of a dervish.
