African: from an altered form under Portuguese influence of a variant of the personal name Nzinga which is known in Congo and Angola. The name is said to be derived from the Kimbundu verb kujinga ‘to twist to turn to wrap’ referring to the umbilical cord being wrapped around a newborn's neck. The surname Mozingo is found chiefly in NC and several other southern states.
