English: occupational name from Middle English crouder crouther ‘player of the croud’ a stringed instrument sometimes known as the Welsh fiddle (Middle English croud a borrowing of Welsh crwth). In Wales and in English counties bordering Wales the name may have been an Anglicized form of the equivalent Welsh crythor ‘fiddler’. The surname also occurs as Crowther . Americanized form of German Krauter or its Dutch cognates Kruiter and Kruider.
