The Federation of Genealogical Societies will hold their 2001
annual conference in the Quad Cities area (Davenport, Iowa). This years
conference is co-hosted by the Blackhawk Genealogical Society of Rock Island
& Mercer Counties, Illinois and the Scott County Iowa Genealogical Society.
This four-day conference (12-15 of September 2001) will feature more than one
hundred lectures and seminars.
The opening session will feature Tony Burroughs speaking on the
"Mysteries of Soundex." This talk is described as follows:
Everyone knows how to code the Soundex, right? After twenty-five
years Tony still had problems coding his surname and considered taking "Soundex
101 for Dummies." Finally, he began an unrelenting search for a simple
answer. Tonys investigation was like opening Pandoras box. His
discoveries have implications for all researchers and extend beyond genealogy.
Youll be amazed at what he found and the long hidden discoveries he
made. Come and hear about what he has learned.
I have heard Tony speak on a number of occasions. Given his topic
for the FGS Conference, I certainly do want to be seated in the audience for
this one.
The conference organizers have created a special e-zine (electronic
magazine) for conference registrants. This e-zine will contain update information
regarding the conference, last minute changes, etc. In short, this e-zine will
provide additional information on the conference from what is available in the
registration brochure. There is no charge for this e-zine. In fact, you dont
even have to attend the conference in order to receive the e-mail updates.
