More on "Put Your Genealogy on the Web"
In last week’s newsletter I wrote about the more popular methods of placing your genealogy data online. In that article, I wrote, "The more popular services include Ancestry.com, RootsWeb, OneGreatFamily.com, Genealogy.com, MyTrees.com and, to some extent, FamilySearch.org." Note the words "more popular services."

Quite a few people sent e-mails asking about some of the other "GEDCOM services" on the Web. In fact, there are a number of other online services that will accept GEDCOM files from you and allow you to search the GEDCOM files submitted by others. This week I will mention a few others that I am aware of.

First, the ones I mentioned last week:

Ancestry World Tree at: www.ancestry.com/trees/main.htm?lfl=m

RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project at: worldconnect.rootsweb.com

OneGreatFamily.com at: onegreatfamily.com

Genealogy.com’s World Family Tree at: familytreemaker.genealogy.com/wftonline

MyTrees.com at: www.mytrees.com

FamilySearch.org (which operates in a different manner) at: www.FamilySearch.org

In addition, here are a few more "GEDCOM services:"

GenCircles is a free service that claims to have 32 million names available at www.gencircles.com

GenServ is a pay service that has a 60-day free trial available: www.genserv.com

GedLink requires that peer-to-peer software be loaded on your Windows PC. The software then sends a summary of your data to a central file server. GedLink has both free and for-pay options at: www.gedlink.com.

My-GED.COM is a free GEDCOM file server at: www.my-ged.com.

One other site worth mentioning is not a GEDCOM service at all. However, data that you put online in a personal home page may end up here. The GENDEX WWW Genealogical Index server indexes thousands of World Wide Web databases containing genealogical data for over twenty million individuals. It gives you the ability to locate and view data of interest to you on any of these databases, without having to visit each of the databases separately. However, you do not submit your data to GENDEX. The service has both free and for-pay options at: www.gendex.com/gendex.
