I wrote last week about the problems of the Public Record Office
in placing the 1901 English and Welsh census returns online. Lots of other people
are asking similar questions. The morning after my newsletter was circulated,
the U.K. Times carried an article about the myriad of problems.
The Times states that QinetiQ, the government-owned corporation
that oversaw the project, was awarded £7 million for the contract to digitize
the 1901 census. That works out to about $10 million U.S. dollars. Was this
money spent wisely?
