Progeny to Add Photos to Its SAR Patriot Index CD
Progeny Software, the producer of the SAR Patriot Index, has put out a call
for photo submissions for the update to its 1999 CD. The company plans to release
the update in 2002 and is asking anyone with photos of patriots to submit them
for inclusion on the CD. Submitters do not need to be members of the Sons of
the American Revolution or even descendants of the patriot. In fact, Progeny
is encouraging local SAR and DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) chapters
to photograph tombstones of Revolutionary patriots to preserve their images
and to provide permanent documentation.
As a member of the DAR, I'm particularly interested in this project and long
for the day when the SAR and DAR can combine forces to document the patriots
together. To me it makes sense, as there are a finite number of patriots and
an ever-growing pool of descendants. Many of the patriots' tombstones have been
transcribed through the years, but because of the ravages of time, some tombstones
no longer exist. Before any more deteriorate beyond readability, the tombstones
should be digitally recorded for all future descendants to experience.
I have a copy of the 1999 SAR Patriot Index by Progeny. The CD is easy
to search and you can quickly tell if one of your ancestors is listed in it
or not (provided you already know some information about that ancestor). You
can type in a surname and/or a given name and click on OK to search for a specific
person. The list of people contains more than just patriots, however. Any descendants
included in the data extraction will also be listed in the name index. I found
the son of one of my husband's ancestors listed in the index and thought momentarily
that I might finally be able to prove a line for my mother-in-law to join the
DAR. But it wasn't this person's line that led to the patriot-it was his wife's.
There are a number of duplicates within the data as the extraction project erred
on the side of caution when encountering duplicate names. Once you find a potential
patriot, you can double click on that person's name and see the information
available for that person. It may show a spouse's name, the child the line descends
through, and any application numbers and applicant names applicable. Some patriots
have very little information in their records. In addition to seeing the family
screen, you can select an ancestor or descendant view and see the available
pedigree information for that person. You can also print reports from the data.
And if you hit pay dirt, you can export data via GEDCOM and import into your
genealogy program.
I have four proven patriot ancestors in the DAR. Unfortunately, only one of
these ancestors is also an accepted patriot in the SAR. This doesn't mean my
other ancestors aren't legitimate, it just means that none of these ancestors'
descendants have applied or been accepted to membership in the SAR. My one ancestor
common to both organizations, Levi Scott, died in Henry County, Kentucky, and
I haven't been there to see if a grave stone still exists. I do, however, have
tombstone photos of a couple of other patriot ancestors that I'd love to submit
for this CD, if they accepted DAR information.
Progeny's next release is scheduled to add thousands of new entries to the database-bringing
the total over seven hundred thousand family history records. If you're interested in submitting
photos, the company will accept either electronic or hard-copy format. Send
the photos to SAR Patriot Index Committee, 3 La Costa Court, Ormond Beach, FL
32174-3811, or e-mail to patriotindex@cfl.rr.com. Photos will be returned if
requested. Electronically submitted photos should be scanned at 300 dpi or better
to allow for better viewing. Any popular format, such as JPG, GIG, BMP, or TIFF,
is acceptable. Be sure to include the following information with each photo
to allow for proper identification:
$ Name and address of member or submitter
$ E-mail address (if available)
$ SAR/DAR National Number (if appropriate)
$ Name of Patriot Ancestor
$ Name and Location of Cemetery
Ensure that any photos you submit are legally yours (not protected by someone
else's copyright) and that the tombstone information can be read. For more information
on the SAR and the Patriot Index, visit the SAR's Web site at http://www.sar.org.
Information on purchasing the CD is at Progeny's Web site at http://www.progenysoftware.com.
I was unable to find information about this request for photos on either Web
site.
