Legacy 3.0 is a very popular free genealogy program with many
powerful features. In fact, this free program has more features than most of
the shareware programs and even more than most of the $10 or $20 commercial
programs. The producers of Legacy 3.0 also sell a Deluxe version for $19.95
(plus another $5 if you want a printed manual and a CD-ROM disk). The Deluxe
version adds the capability to create Adobe Acrobat PDF files, comparison of
two files to find duplicates, advanced sourcing, and some other features. However,
the free version has probably 95 percent of the capability of the Deluxe version.
Another company, Progeny Software, produces a program that reads
genealogy databases and then creates many great-looking reports that might not
be available in the original program. The reports include such things as hourglass
charts and fan charts, as well as some visually pleasing pedigree charts and
descendant charts. Now Progeny Software has announced a new version of their
charting program that is designed to read Legacy 3.0 databases. Here is the
press release:
11 October - Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada --- Today Progeny
Software Inc., developers of quality genealogy software and CD-ROM products,
announced the release of a new charting program for Legacy Family Tree™
users -- Legacy Charting Companion™.
Using Legacy Charting Companion, Legacy users can create a wide variety
of genealogy charts, including Ancestor, Descendant, and Hourglass charts,
as well as the ever popular Fan chart, and a new Bow Tie chart, invented
by Progeny Software. As its name suggests, the Bow Tie chart takes the shape
of a symmetrical bow tie, displaying the subject in a center box, with the
mother and her ancestors to the right, and the father and his ancestors
to the left.
Legacy Charting Companion is also very quick and easy to use. Charts and
professional quality reports can be printed in a variety of sizes, including
a nine-foot wall chart format.
"Legacy Charting Companion is an essential and much-needed addition
to our offering of companion software," explains Ken McGinnis, co-founder
with Dave Berdan of Millennia Corporation, developers of Legacy software.
"Now the extensive network of Legacy users can quickly create a wide
selection of genealogy charts, including several new ones which are not
found in Legacy. Using Legacy Charting Companion, there is no need to import
data. You simply select a person in the database, click the chart type you
want to generate, and boom, it’s there."
Legacy Charting Companion was created by Progeny Software, Inc., an innovative
genealogy software company based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Over the years,
Progeny has earned a reputation as experts in the area of search, report,
and charting software such as PAF Companion™, Progeny Family Explorer™ (distributed
with research databases on CD-ROM) and Genelines™. When Millennia approached
Progeny with this Legacy project, it was a natural fit.
"Each time we develop a new charting utility we are given the opportunity
to enhance and upgrade our basic set of proprietary technologies,"
explains Bob Thomas, President of Progeny Software, Inc. "For instance,
the Bow Tie chart in Legacy Charting Companion is something our developers
created and so can’t be found in any genealogy database program available
today. We’ve also added an Hourglass chart, and support for the use of photos
in box style charts."
Legacy Charting Companion operates on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP, and requires
16 MB RAM. It is available for $24.95 US as a download from Millennia’s
online store at www.legacyfamilytree.com.
