Citation Corner Index Page

I want to share the formats of citations for different types of materials each week to help you document your evidence. The definitive reference for citations for genealogical information is Elizabeth Shown Mills' book, Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian, which is available through all the major online booksellers' Web site and in their stores (or special order).

*Editor's Note: When citations occur within George's column, they come after his column, near the end of the page.

Citing Sources

It is important to cite your sources for the information you uncover in your research and present as evidence of facts. First, to provide a reference for yourself and second, to document your findings in detail so that another researcher looking at your work next week or fifty years from now can retrace your steps and examine the materials himself/herself.

Web Citations
(This section found in "Cemetery Research Online")
28 September 2001
Let's examine two common types of Web site citations: simple Web pages and information gleaned from a Web-based database, such as that you might find in Ancestry.com's databases.

Three Citation Formats
(This section found in "Let's Celebrate Families and Family History")
5 October 2001
Consider the citation format you wish to use based on how you plan to use it. The first style, a BIBLIOGRAPHIC citation, second style is the FOOTNOTE or ENDNOTE, and the third style is used for the SOURCE. Also, consider two valuable sources in the newspaper citations: the article and the obituary.
