Barnett Moves to AltaVista
James Barnett is a name known to many in the genealogy business; he is the former president of MyFamily.com, Inc. Mr. Barnett now has a new position: Chief Executive Officer for the struggling AltaVista search engine company.

Parent company CMGI has been struggling to keep AltaVista financially afloat. The site is suffering from a decline in both visitors and advertisers. The company has had previous layoffs and this week announced a further workforce reduction. At the same time, it announced the appointment of the new CEO. AltaVista will cut another 160 employees, bringing the staff count down to about 340 people. The company's comparison shopping service also is being discontinued.

James Barnett will be the first CEO at the Palo Alto, California-based company since Rod Schrock stepped down about a year ago.
