According to a recent study by Media Metrix, genealogy is the
most popular lifestyle category on the Internet for older adults. This seems to
fit well with the article in Time magazine last year that rated genealogy as one
of the three most popular topics on the World Wide Web. The other two most
popular topics were sex and money, which is a statement by itself.
MyFamily.com (sponsors of this newsletter) seems to have done
well in the Media Metrix ratings as well as in a recent Nielsen/Net Ratings
report. Both reports listed Ancestry.com as the highest-rated genealogy Web
site. (Ancestry.com is owned and operated by MyFamily.com.)
The Media Metrix 500
is a list of the top 500 digital media sites covering all topics, including
commercial online services, Internet service providers, e-commerce, and other
ad-supported sites and applications that attract the most "unique"
visitors (multiple visits by the same person count only once) over the course of
one month. The most recent list of the top 500 digital media sites is for the
month of November 2000. It lists three of the MyFamily.com sites in the
"Top 500 Digital Media Web Sites":
