    A practical outline by genealogists familiar with LDS resources.

  • Irish and Scotch-Irish Ancestral Research. Margaret D. Falley, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2 vols., 1981 (orig. pub. 1962).
    Continues to be valuable for history and background to the sources; use in conjunction with a more recent guide (e.g., Grenham or Ryan).

  • Tracing Irish Ancestors: A Practical Guide. Gorry, Paul and Maire Macconghail. Glasgow: HarperCollins, 1997.
    Combines good advice, plain language, and a reasonable price.

  • Tracing Your Irish Ancestors. 2nd edition John Grenham, Dublin: Gill and Macmillan, 1999.
    There are important additions and changes to the new edition of this useful guide.

  • Directory of Irish Archives. 2nd ed. Helferty, Seamus and Raymond Refausse. Dublin: Irish Academic Press, 1993.
    Summarizes the holdings of the major archives and libraries.

    Good advice on starting Irish research and preparing for a trip.

    The best book on names, and the introduction is required reading.

    Describes the content and value of the main classes of Ulster sources.

    The commonly used boundary maps in one place.

    Locations, hours, major contents.

  • Irish Records: Sources for Family and Local History. Rev. edition. James G. Ryan. Salt Lake City: Ancestry, 1997.
    Lists all the major sources by county (with many LDS references); includes brief histories, societies, heritage centers–a good first stop.
