Ancestry Quick Tip

Unconfirmed Source Citation

An earlier quick tip mentioned using a (?) following data for which you might not have a good source. I do use the (?) when making those entries but I also have a master source called “unconfirmed.” I attach it to the entry and then explain why I think it is/is not accurate and what my thoughts are about finding further documentation. I also sometimes paste this information into the person's notes. And if I share this information with anyone I am careful to tell them I do not have the proof I would like to have, that it needs further researching.

Thanks to Joanne for today's Quick Tip! If you have a tip you would like to share with researchers, you can send it to ADN editor@ancestry.com.

Quick Tips may be reprinted, with credit to the submitter, in other Ancestry publications, so if you do not want your tip included in a publication other than the Ancestry Daily News and Ancestry Weekly Digest, please state so clearly in your message.
