Find records on the original Pilgrims

Learn how to start your family tree!
Pilgrim Surnames included Bradford, Brewster, Fletcher, Fuller, Hopkins, Mullins, Rogers and White. If your surname (or maiden name) is one of these, you may be a Pilgrim descendent. You'll never know unless you trace your family tree.

Here's how get the most from your family history search:
  • Start with what you know. Ask your relatives what they know about your family history.

  • Work backwards from the most recent generation that will be on your family tree. It could be you or your children or grandchildren.

  • Search for family records from Ancestry.com's main search page. This gives you access to all of our major databases. Generally speaking, you'll find too much or too little when you use this mega-search tool.

    • If there's too much:
      • Include a middle name. This could narrow the field considerably.
      • Specify a location -- adding a country, state or province will focus the search.
      • Specify year ranges -- a search of +/- 25 years will find records within a 50-year range.

    • If you find too little:
      • Don't use the full name. Try entering the first and middle names separately. Maybe you know your ancestor as John Frederick Tullman, however in official records he could be John Tullman or Frederick Tullman.

  • Search the Ancestry World Tree, a compilation of more than more than 200 million names in family trees submitted by our users.
