Ancestry World Tree
Submitting to the Ancestry World Tree

The Ancestry World Tree contains information submitted by thousands of researchers all over the world. To submit your family tree to this growing collection and to allow your research to help others, you can upload a family file to the Ancestry World Tree from your home computer. You can submit your family file in two formats, either as an Online Family Tree file or as a special genealogy file called a GEDCOM file. To upload your family's genealogy to the Ancestry World Tree, choose one of the two options and follow its instructions below.

Submit a File from Your Online Family Tree:

  1. Click the Share navigation tab. The Share Your Family History page will display.

  2. Click the Ancestry World Tree link located in the section links. The Ancestry World Tree page will display.

  3. Click the Submit an Online Family Tree link located in the left navigation bar. The Online Family Tree main page will display.

  4. If you have not already logged in, a Login page will display before the Online Family Tree main page. Enter your username and password in the Login to Your Online Family Tree box.

  5. Click the Login Now! button. Your Online Family Tree main page will display.

  6. Locate the Online Family Tree you want to add to the Ancestry World Tree.

  7. Click the World icon located to the right of the name of the Online Family Tree. A World Tree Submission Agreement will display in a separate browser window.

  8. If you agree to the submission rules, click the Accept button. If you do not want to post your family tree to the Ancestry World Tree, click the Cancel button. If you click the Accept button, a confirmation window will display notifying you that your Online Family Tree will be included in the Ancestry World Tree within ten days.

  9. Click the OK button.

Note: After you have uploaded the Online Family Tree, the World icon will display with a red arrow pointing up. You can click this icon to update the Online Family Tree in the Ancestry World Tree if you have made changes to your file that you want to share with other researchers. Also, a World icon with an "X" through it will now display to the right of this icon, allowing you to remove the file from the Ancestry World Tree.

Note: Before submitting, you must clear your file of living individuals.

Submit a GEDCOM File:

  1. Click the Share navigation tab. The Share Your Family History page will display.

  2. Click the Ancestry World Tree link located in the section links. The Ancestry World Tree page will display.

  3. Click the Submit to Ancestry World Tree link located in the left navigation bar. An Ancestry World Tree Submission page will display.

  4. If you have not already logged in, a Login page will display before the Submission page. Enter your username and password in the Login to Your Online Family Tree box.

  5. Click the Login Now! button. The Submission page will now display.

  6. Click in the Description field and enter the title of the family tree you are uploading.

  7. Click the Browse button and locate the GEDCOM file you want to upload.  A Choose File window will display.

  8. Click in the Look in drop-down menu, and click on the directory your GEDCOM file is stored in.

  9. Locate the GEDCOM file you want to upload and click it.  The file name will display in the File Name field.

  10. Click the Open button located on the right side of the window.  The file name, along with the file path, will display in the File to Upload field.

  11. To upload the GEDCOM file, click the Upload GEDCOM button.  A GEDCOM Upload page will display. It will take a few moments to upload the file.

Note: Before you can submit a GEDCOM file to the Ancestry World Tree, you must have a genealogy software program on your computer that allows you to create a family tree and save it as a GEDCOM file. You must also clear your file of any living individuals.
