Computer Genealogy
Computers have provided a valuable way to store data so that others can easily
access and retrieve the information. To learn more about how technology has
effected genealogy research, follow the instructions below:
- Click the Learn tab located at the top of the page. The Learn@Ancestry.com
page will display.
- Click the Learning Center link located in the section links. The
Learning Center page will display.
- Click the Computer Genealogy link located in the left navigation
bar. The GEDCOMS and Other Genealogical Files page will display.
- Click the technology topic you want to know more about from the following
list located in the left navigation bar:
- GEDCOMS and Other Genealogical Files: Computers are used to create
and store most family history files. This section helps you understand the
different file formats and the ones you need to be aware of to share your
files between software applications.
- How to Create Your Own GEDCOM: In order to make researching your
family history more versatile, there is a universal file type that most
programs can convert and use. This section provides specific instructions
on exporting GEDCOM files for eight of the top-selling family history applications.
- Downloading GEDCOM Files from the Ancestry World Tree: The Ancestry
World Tree is a huge database that continues to grow every day as people
add more names to the database. This section provides some general information
on downloading files from the Ancestry World Tree.
