from Riccalton in Oxnam (Roxburghs) from Old English tūn ‘farm village’ with an uncertain first element. In modern Scots rickle means (i) ‘a dilapidated structure’ (ii) ‘a dry-stone wall’ among other location-related senses; the ancestor of this does not appear to be responsible for the Roxburghs place-name but may have influenced its development.perhaps also from Rickleton in Birtley (Durham) which is recorded as Rykelingden in 1339 and Rikleden in 142 The place-name derives from Old English denu ‘valley’ with an uncertain first element.
