from Poughley Farm in Chaddleworth (Berks) which is recorded as Pohanlech in a 13th-century copy of a document from 821 and Poghele in 1241 or Poughley in East Garston (Berks) which is recorded as Poghele in 136 The place-names probably derive from Old English pohha ‘pouch bag’ + lēah ‘wood woodland clearing’. The sense of pohha in these and other place-names is unclear.
