It was borne by several Christian saints including a 4th-century bishop of Trier (see also Paulino ). Germanized or Americanized form of Slovenian and Croatian Pavlin . In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ). The surname Paulin is also found in Slovenia and Croatia. Germanized or Americanized form of Czech Pavlín (see Pavlin ). This surname is also found in Czechia where it is very rare and spelled Paulín.
