Assyrian/Chaldean: from a pet form of the Syriac personal name Yōnān ‘Jonah’ (see Yonan ) or from a Syriac form of the personal name Nonnos (from Latin Nonnus) borne by the bishop of Edessa a Christian saint who flourished in the 5th century.
