from the lost place-name Kingeswelle in Newchurch (IoW) which is recorded thus in about 1258 (the location being now represented by Duxmore Farm) and probably also from King's Well in Wartling (Sussex) which is recorded as Kyngiswell in 155 Both place-names mean ‘the king's spring’ from Middle English king ‘king’ (genitive kinges) + well ‘spring stream’ (Old English cyning genitive cyninges + wella).
