Japanese: written 川田 or 河田 ‘rice paddy by the river’. The first version is mainly found in the Tokyo and Ōsaka areas while the second is in western Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands. Borne by samurai families of Inaba (now part of Tottori prefecture) and Tosa (now Kōchi prefecture). Some bearers descend from the Seiwa Genji . It is sometimes pronounced Kawata .
