variant of Hobbs or more likely a reduced form of Hobbins . see Hobhouse . perhaps from Great or Little Hautbois (Norfolk) with 12th-century spellings like Hobosse Hobuisse and 14th-century Hobesse. The place-name probably derives from Old English *hobb ‘hummock tussock’ + *wisse ‘meadow marsh’ or wisce ‘marshy meadow’. However any of the early bearers listed below may belong with (1).
