The Sussex placename derives from Old English hæsel ‘hazel’ + denn ‘pasture’ while the Lancashire placename derives from Old English hæslen ‘growing with hazels’ + denu ‘valley’. The other placenames derive from Old English hæsel + denu. There has been some confusion with Hazelton .
