Italian and Spanish: from the personal name Cipriano from Latin Cyprianus originally an ethnic name for an inhabitant of Cyprus. The name was borne by a bishop of Carthage who was martyred in 258 and by another saint probably legendary whose cult was suppressed by the Holy See in 1969.
